Vedānta – Bhagavad Gītā – Chapter 15

Vedānta – Bhagavad Gītā – Chapter 15

‘The Knowledge of the Self’
with Sonia Novaes
Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gītā, called Puruṣottama-yoga, is one of the most significant, complete, and brief chapters in this scripture. It is a text of fundamental importance because it summarizes the entire essence of the Upaniṣads in its twenty verses, leading to the understanding that everything is the Self.
Firstly, Lord Kṛṣṇa presents the nature of saṁsāra using the image of a tree. The intention is to help Arjuna develop detachment from saṁsāra. It is very important to understand that there is no mokṣa within saṁsāra, since its context implies erroneous knowledge about realities, caused by ignorance of the Self. Therefore, Lord Kṛṣṇa teaches the truth of the Self, the ātma-tattva.
This illustrious chapter addresses the essential topics of any spiritual path: the world, the individual, God, and the relationship between the individual, the world, and God. It also deals with qualification, which enables a person to cross the cycle of birth and death.
